What is “Real-Time”?

Real-time is a phrase used to describe the timing behaviour of a system to stimulus. For machine control purposes we expect reaction to events such as push button presses, faults, sensor activation to be consistent and fast enough for the application. Unacceptable or unpredictable variations in timing of responses would NOT be considered ‘real-time’.
